ATLANTA, Georgia-The National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) announced at its annual event that Chad Mumm, a fourth-year student at the University of Georgia (Athens), and David Wilson, a first-year student at Southern Connecticut State University (New Haven), have received the inaugural David W. Iwald Journalism Fellowship. Two young talents were honored at the media breakfast at the 60th NBAA Annual Conference and Exhibition. The award not only carries memories of industry pioneers, but also hopes for a new generation of aviation communicators. It is worth noting that this award coincides with the global aviation industry focusing on the Las Vegas International Aerospace Exhibition in the United States. The two events jointly outline a vivid picture of the development and inheritance of the aviation field.
As one of the most influential organizations in the field of business aviation, NBAA has established a special scholarship with the late publisher David Ewald to continue its outstanding contribution to the industry's information dissemination for half a century. With Business and Commercial Aviation magazine as the carrier, Iwald took the lead in building an information bridge between manufacturers, operators and users in the ascendant era of business jets and turboprop aircraft. As NBAA President Ed Boren said in his award speech: "When the world has not yet clarified the value of new aircraft, it is Yvold who has built the knowledge transfer network with his keen insight and cultivated the information ecology of the entire industry."
This scholarship, with "inheritance and innovation" as its core, opens a dual channel for young students in the field of journalism and communication: it not only encourages high school students to aspire to participate in aviation news reporting, but also supports students majoring in journalism to deepen their understanding of the industry. The jury revealed that this year's winners stood out from nearly 100 applications, and the aviation theme report proposal submitted by them showed a deep understanding of the pain points of the industry and spread innovative thinking. Chad Momm's Sky Economy column in the school newspaper and David Wilson's attempts to report on electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) technology are all indicators of the professional potential of the new generation of observers.
The special significance of this award ceremony is cleverly echoed in the space-time dimension with the International Aerospace Exhibition being held in Las Vegas. As one of the three major air shows in the world, the Las Vegas exhibition brings together giants such as Boeing and Pakistan Airlines to showcase cutting-edge technologies in the field of business aviation. It is noteworthy that NBAA has specially set up the "Future Communicator" exhibition area to present the representative works of award-winning students on the same stage as the latest developments in the industry, thus building an interactive platform across academic and industry.
Standing on the coordinate system constructed by the two cities of Atlanta and Las Vegas, the significance of the David W. Iwald Journalism Scholarship has gone beyond mere honors. It is not only a tribute to the spirit of the pioneers of the industry half a century ago, but also an innovative kinetic energy injected into aviation communication in the digital age. When the award-winning students shuttled through the air show booth with recording equipment and used social media to broadcast the flight demonstration live, Yvold's creed of "writing history for the sky" was continuing a new chapter in the form of all media. As President Bolen emphasized in his award speech: "This is not the end, but a beacon to the future-when more young voices join the aviation narrative, the entire industry will gain more momentum.
